Tawau Hills Park with 1stopBorneo is such a special wildlife experience
We visited Tawau Hills Park for 5 days during our month long visit to Borneo and absolutely fell in love. If you are looking for great opportunities to see and learn about wildlife in a more authentic way, away from large tours and very touristy packages, I can't recommend this experience enough. We saw Rhinocerous Hornbills close up, red leaf monkeys, including the white morph feeding nearby on the ground, gibbons swinging in the canopy in the mornings, and were able to observe many hornbills flying around the treetops in the wild of other varieties. We were able to find tarsiers at night and thanks to our wonderful guides: including Yulinda and Shavez, we were able to find so many other beautiful creatures: from green crested lizards, a bat sleeping in a leaf, lanternbugs, sleeping birds in trees and different snakes and frogs and lizards and other insects: including a dead leaf mantis and a violin beetle. On our last night we were even lucky enough to encounter a Malay Civet near the lodge and a mousedeer too.
Tawau was such a special and rewarding place to explore, and it was made extra special being surrounded by so much information about Borneo wildlife and the knowledge of the ecologists, who were so generous in sharing with us so much knowledge they have gained through their years of living in Tawau.
The accommodation is basic but comfortable and the meals were delicious, and it is great knowing that the money you spend on the tours (which is very reasonable and good value) goes back into the amazing conservation projects run by 1stopBorneo. We thought you had to spend lots of money going to more expensive places like Danum and Tabin for a great wildlife experience, but this visit proved this wasn't the case.
Thank you so much to the team at 1stopBorneo for this experience!
