The memorial was resurrected to commemorate the brave Australian and British soldiers who died as Prisoners of War in the Ranau death marches during WWII as well as serves as a memorial to the people of North Borneo who bravely risked their lives to aid them. The memorial contains four gardens, each individually designed to represent the different nationalities of soldiers in the death marches. The serenity the gardens exude serve as a place not just for walks of reflection and remembrance but also of contemplation and to remember the heroes that have sacrificed their lives for our future.
