Sabah Safe After Deep Offshore Earthquake

An offshore earthquake measuring magnitude 6.8 was recorded at midnight on 23 February 2026. As reported by the Malaysian Meteorological Department, the tremor occurred at coordinates 7.0° North and 116.4° East, at a depth of 678km, approximately 49km west of Kudat. Given the significant depth of the quake, there is no tsunami threat, and authorities have confirmed that no casualties or major damage have occurred. Met Malaysia has not issued any further warnings at this time.

Tourism Activities Operating as Normal

All key tourism gateways and destinations across Sabah, including Kota Kinabalu, Mount Kinabalu, Semporna, Sandakan, and Kudat, remain unaffected. Airports, road networks, hotels, island transfers, and tour operations are running as scheduled, with local agencies continuing routine monitoring as part of standard safety procedures

Sabah is naturally sheltered from major typhoons and lies outside the most active seismic belts in the region, making large scale natural disasters uncommon. Travellers planning their visit can proceed with confidence.
