The United States is encouraging Americans and travellers from other countries to visit Sabah, citing improved security and more relaxed travel advice for eastern Sabah.
US Embassy Chargé d’Affaires to Malaysia David Gamble said the changes reflected the improved security situation and noted that other countries were reviewing their advisories. He welcomed more international tourists to experience Sabah.
Gamble spoke after launching Freedom 250 Sabah at the state library in Tanjung Aru, Kota Kinabalu. The campaign marks the 250th anniversary of US independence.

Eased Travel Advice for Sabah
The US revised its eastern Sabah advisory in February 2026. Its current Malaysia advisory places the country at Level 1, advising normal precautions. Islands and maritime areas off Eastern Sabah, from Kudat to Tawau, remain Level 2, calling for increased caution due to kidnapping risk.
Japan also eased its advice four months later, lowering the advisory for coastal areas from Kudat to Tawau, including Pulau Banggi and Pulau Balambangan, from Level 2 to Level 1. International visitors should consult their own government’s current guidance when planning a trip.
