About the Location
Atkinson Clock Tower
Standing proudly since 1905, the Atkinson Clock Tower is Kota Kinabalu’s oldest surviving structure and one of its most treasured landmarks. Originally built to honour Francis George Atkinson, the city’s first District Officer, it has withstood World War II bombings and urban redevelopment to remain a symbol of endurance. The tower now anchors the Atkinson Clock Tower Square, featuring landscaped plazas, rest areas, and an information kiosk that welcomes visitors to begin their Signal Hill journey.
Signal Hill Observatory Tower
At the opposite end of the treetop walkway, the Signal Hill Observatory Tower offers panoramic views of Kota Kinabalu’s skyline, islands, and the South China Sea. Recently refurbished under DBKK’s management plan, it serves as both the finishing point of the Signal Hill Treetop Walk and a signature lookout for visitors. This elevated vantage point captures the contrast between cityscape and rainforest, making it one of the city’s most iconic spots for photography and sunset watching.
Jalan Dewan
Jalan Dewan (formerly Australia Place) lies just below the Atkinson Clock Tower, forming part of Kota Kinabalu’s historic downtown. Once used by Australian soldiers during World War II, this atmospheric street has evolved into a vibrant arts and café corridor, known for its creative energy and heritage charm. Today, Jalan Dewan is home to local coffee houses, boutique restaurants, street murals, and cultural spaces, making it a popular hangout for both locals and visitors. Discover the top restaurants and cafés at Lorong Dewan here.
