If you are looking for something beyond the usual weekend bazaar, the GRESUNALI Bazaar is where you want to be on 25 April.
Bringing together Indigenous communities from across Sabah, this upcoming bazaar offers a rare opportunity to experience authentic local products, meet the people behind them, and support community-driven livelihoods.
But what makes GRESUNALI truly different is this. It is not just a marketplace. It is the result of a long-standing grassroots movement built by Orang Asal communities themselves.

Why GRESUNALI is Different
Many bazaars focus on trends. GRESUNALI focuses on people, heritage, and sustainability.
Community-Led, Not Commercially Driven
GRESUNALI is organised by Indigenous communities themselves. It is a bottom-up initiative built on decades of collaboration and shared purpose.
Rooted in Culture and Identity
The products at this bazaar are not manufactured to a trend. They are the result of traditional knowledge passed down within communities: craftsmanship, farming practices, and everyday ingenuity.
Focused on Sustainable Livelihoods
This year's theme, " Pengukuhan Kesatuan Kumpulan Sebagai Teras Daya Tahan Sosio-Ekonomi Komuniti" (Strengthening Group Unity as the Core of Community Socio-Economic Resilience), reflects what GRESUNALI has always been about: not just a day of sales, but a long-term commitment to economic self-determination for Orang Asal communities.
The Story Behind GRESUNALI
In 1998, 11 villages came together with a shared goal to build an economic network rooted in culture, cooperation, and community strength. By 1999, the network had grown, drawing in more communities and deepening the ties between them.
In the early years, these gatherings took place as part of ongoing community socio-economic meetings and bazaars, where communities exchanged knowledge, planned initiatives, and began marketing their own products.
In 2000, the first bazaar was held. It marked a turning point, showing that communities could organise and manage their own economic platforms.
In 2013, the initiative was formalised under the name GRESUNALI, which stands for Green Sustainable Natural Livelihood. The name reflects the movement’s core principles of sustainability, community resilience, and livelihoods rooted in Indigenous knowledge and practices.
Since then:
- Over 25 GRESUNALI Bazaars have been organised
- Participation has grown across Sabah and beyond
- The mission has remained consistent
To strengthen solidarity, build partnerships, and create sustainable economic opportunities from within.
More Than a Bazaar
Today, GRESUNALI also functions as a gathering for knowledge exchange, a space where communities share what is working, plan future initiatives, and reinforce the networks that make long-term resilience possible.
Participants come back each year not just to sell, but to learn, connect, and grow together.
Why You Should Visit GRESUNALI
Visiting the GRESUNALI Bazaar is not just about shopping. It is about supporting Indigenous entrepreneurs directly, discovering authentic locally made products, and experiencing a community-led movement rooted in culture and sustainability.
This one has been community-built since 1998, and the communities who built it will be there in person.
If you’re travelling from Kota Kinabalu, consider renting a car or scooter for a more flexible and convenient journey:
The GRESUNALI Bazaar is a reminder that Indigenous communities are capable of building their own economies, on their own terms.
If you are in Sabah on 25 April, make time to visit. You are not just attending a bazaar. You are stepping into a story that has been growing for almost three decades.
