What is Kiulu? 

Kiulu is a small town and sub-district in Sabah’s Tuaran district, known for its river scenery, rural landscapes and outdoor activities. It has become one of the most popular countryside adventure areas near Kota Kinabalu, especially for beginner-friendly white water rafting on the Kiulu River. 

The name “Kiulu” is said to come from “Tulu”, a type of small bamboo plant that grows along the riverbank.  

Where is Kiulu? 

Kiulu is located on the West Coast of Sabah, under the Tuaran district. It is about 47 kilometres from Kota Kinabalu and around 23 kilometres from Tuaran town, making it suitable for a half-day or full-day trip from the city.

1. Go White Water Rafting on Kiulu River 

Kiulu White Water Rafting is the signature activity in Kiulu and one of the easiest outdoor adventures to add to a Kota Kinabalu itinerary. The river is generally suitable for beginners, making it a good choice for families, groups and first-time rafters.

Getting to Kiulu from Kota Kinabalu 

Kiulu is commonly visited as a day trip from Kota Kinabalu. The easiest option is to book a guided package with return transport included, especially for rafting, cycling, jungle survival or combo tours. 

Self-driving is also possible, but check the exact meeting point before travelling. Rafting bases, cycling starting points, campsites and attractions may be located in different parts of the Kiulu area. 

Best Time to Visit Kiulu 

Kiulu can be visited year-round, but weather and river conditions can affect your experience. For rafting, water levels may influence the route and the feel of the rapids. For camping, cycling and hiking, clearer weather is better for comfort and views.
